Balcony Collapse Near UC Campus Sends Ten to Hospital, One with Life-Threatening Injuries
CINCINNATI, OH – Ten individuals were hospitalized, one with life-threatening injuries, after an apartment balcony collapsed Friday night in the Corryville neighborhood, mere blocks from the University of Cincinnati campus.
The incident occurred around 10 p.m. at a residential building, with firefighters reporting that an 8-foot by 12-foot balcony gave way, sending its occupants plummeting approximately 20 feet to the pavement below. Authorities attributed the collapse to an excessive number of people on the structure.
Most of the injured were transported to the University of Cincinnati Medical Center, located just a half-mile from the scene. In addition to the life-threatening injury, the fire department classified four other injuries as serious. Deputy Fire Chief Nicholas Caliguri indicated that it’s possible additional victims may have sought medical attention independently.
Fire department spokeswoman Lindsay Haegele confirmed that some of the victims were University of Cincinnati students, with reports suggesting they were celebrating after successfully completing an exam.
Eclipse Community Management, which oversees condominium and homeowner associations and manages the property, issued a letter to residents stating, “We want to assure you that the situation is being addressed with the highest priority.”
A neighbor told the Cincinnati Enquirer that they observed between 40 to 50 people on the street just before the collapse. The Hamilton County Division of Buildings and Inspections has been notified and is expected to investigate the structural integrity of the building.
This incident follows a partial building collapse in downtown Cincinnati in November 2019, which resulted in one fatality and several injuries.
