Meta’s AI Division Undergoes Restructuring, 600 Employees Affected
MENLO PARK, CA – Meta is undergoing a significant restructuring within its burgeoning Meta Superintelligence Labs (MSL) division, leading to the layoff of approximately 600 employees. The move, confirmed by a Meta spokesperson, aims to streamline operations and enhance agility within the company’s ambitious artificial intelligence initiatives.
Alexandr Wang, Meta’s chief AI officer, addressed the cuts in an internal memo to staff on Wednesday. “By reducing the size of our team, fewer conversations will be required to make a decision, and each person will be more load-bearing and have more scope and impact,” Wang stated, emphasizing the company’s goal of fostering a more agile and “talent-dense” environment. Affected North American employees have already been notified, with those in EMEA awaiting consultation.
This wave of job reductions comes as Meta fine-tunes its extensive AI organization, which encompasses various groups including product and research, infrastructure, Facebook Artificial Intelligence Research (FAIR), and TBD – an elite team focused on developing next-generation AI models.
The MSL division was established in June with the critical mission of spearheading CEO Mark Zuckerberg’s vision for “personal superintelligence,” a term he uses to describe AI systems capable of eventually surpassing human capabilities. This division has rapidly emerged as one of Meta’s most vital and costly ventures, with hundreds of millions of dollars invested in recruiting top-tier engineers and researchers from industry leaders like OpenAI, Google DeepMind, and Apple.
However, this rapid expansion has not been without its challenges. Internal friction has reportedly arisen due to overlapping mandates and shifting priorities, leading to tensions and some early staff departures. These recent layoffs align with Zuckerberg’s broader strategy of cultivating “small, talent-dense teams” across the company.
Despite the job cuts, Wang’s memo underscored that this restructuring does not signal a decrease in investment in AI. He stated that Meta will continue to recruit “industry-leading AI-native talent” and remains confident in the division’s path to superintelligence, citing excitement about current model training, ambitious compute plans, and product development. The company is also supporting the majority of impacted employees in finding new internal roles through an expedited hiring process.
