The Great Chocolate Chip Showdown: Which Brand Reigns Supreme for Your Fall Baking?
As the leaves change and temperatures drop, many of us feel the irresistible urge to fire up our ovens and get baking. And if you’re like me, a trip to the grocery store for baking essentials often leads to a moment of indecision in the chocolate chip aisle. With so many brands vying for your attention, how do you choose the best?
Having previously put countless grocery store items to the test for Cheapism, I decided it was high time to tackle the ultimate chocolate chip challenge. I sampled seven popular brands of semi-sweet chocolate chips, meticulously ranking them from best to worst to help you make an informed decision for your next batch of cookies, brownies, or whatever chocolatey creation your heart desires.
My Method to the Madness
Let me tell you, this was no easy feat! The top four contenders were incredibly close, making distinguishing between them a true test of my taste buds. I did my best to channel my inner Daredevil, focusing solely on flavor profiles, though I admit, I’m no superhero when it comes to sensory deprivation.
My ranking system considers chips from “sweet, rich, and velvety” at the top, to “dry, chalky, and bitter” at the bottom.
The Champion: Nestlé Toll House Semi-Sweet Chocolate Morsels
Seriously, what more could you ask for? Nestlé Toll House delivers pure, unadulterated chocolatey bliss.
While still semi-sweet, there’s a subtle extra sweetness that elevates these morsels above the rest. Any cookie or, dare I say, ice cream sandwich, would be truly honored to feature these beauties.
They are, in a word, perfect.
The Runners-Up:
2. Ghirardelli Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips: These chips boast a deep, rich flavor.
However, I did notice some chocolate bloom – that tell-tale grey film – which, while not affecting taste, indicates improper storage. For a chocolate titan like Ghirardelli, I expected a pristine appearance.
3. 365 Whole Foods Market Organic Semi-Sweet Chocolate: Interestingly, these organic chips from Whole Foods leaned more towards a dark chocolate flavor, despite being labeled semi-sweet. If you prefer a less sweet, more intense chocolate experience, these are a solid choice, sitting comfortably on the darker side of the semi-sweet spectrum.
4. Hershey’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate Chips: Hershey’s lands squarely in the middle of the pack.
There’s nothing inherently wrong with these chips – they’re pleasant enough, with a lush, almost pudding-like consistency that reminds me of hardened Hershey’s syrup. If the top three are unavailable, Hershey’s will certainly get the job done.
The Rest of the Pack:
5. Guittard Semi-Sweet Dairy-Free Chocolate Chips: My local store was out of Guittard’s standard chips, so I grabbed the dairy-free version.
While there’s a slight richness missing that dairy typically provides, these are surprisingly good. For a dairy-free option, I’d be hard-pressed to find a better alternative.
6. Enjoy Life Dairy-Free Semi-Sweet Mega Chunks: “Chunks!”
you might exclaim. Yes, chunks!
And I say, why not? While these “mega chunks” offer a great size and texture (despite some chocolate bloom), the dairy-free aspect is more noticeable here.
There’s a subtle lack of depth in the chocolate flavor that makes it hard to forget you’re not eating the real thing.
7. Lily’s Semi-Sweet Chocolate Style Baking Chips: Oh, Lily’s.
The words “chocolate style” and “baking chips” immediately gave me pause, conjuring up images of “chocolate drink” on a Yoo-Hoo bottle. Initially, I was pleasantly surprised by the taste for a no-sugar-added option.
But then, the Stevia hit. And it hit hard.
If artificial sweeteners are your jam, then by all means, enjoy. But for me, it was an overwhelming and unwelcome presence that ultimately landed Lily’s at the bottom of the list.
So, there you have it! The definitive ranking of popular semi-sweet chocolate chips. Next time you’re stocking up for your baking adventures, you’ll know exactly which bag to reach for!
