Athens, GA – October 26, 2024 – A night out in Athens took a shocking turn Thursday evening when a man dressed as a Nazi SS officer was arrested following an alleged assault at a local pub. Kenneth Leland Morgan, 32, stands accused of breaking a woman’s nose with a beer glass after being ejected from Cutter’s Pub.
The incident unfolded when Morgan, clad in a black Nazi SS uniform, military cap, and a swastika-adorned armband, attempted to enter Cutter’s Pub. Outraged patrons quickly noticed his attire, leading to his denial of entry.
Videos circulating on social media captured the heated moments as bystanders pushed Morgan out of the bar. As the crowd chanted for him to leave, Morgan allegedly swung his beer pitcher, striking Grace Lang, a University of Georgia student, who was attempting to remove his armband.
Lang, a photography and geology major, sustained a broken nose and required four stitches to her bridge. She recounted the harrowing experience to a local outlet, stating, “He is grinning ear to ear the entire time, including while assaulting me.”
She added that her eye was black and swollen shut, and she has been experiencing head and neck pain. Lang was at the bar with friends, including one who is Jewish, when the altercation occurred.
Athens-Clarke County Police Department booking records indicate Morgan was arrested around 2:56 a.m. on October 24, facing charges of aggravated assault and simple battery. His bond was set at $1,500.
Bryce Fowler, General Manager at Cutter’s Pub, emphasized the establishment’s commitment to customer safety and a welcoming environment for all. “At Cutter’s Pub, our top priority is customer safety, and we will continue to do everything we can to make everyone feel safe and welcomed,” Fowler stated. “We pride ourselves on being a diverse crowd and serving everyone who walks through the door with respect.”
The incident has drawn strong condemnation from local community groups. The Young Democrats of UGA and ACC released a statement denouncing the act as antisemitic.
“Nazis and antisemites like Lee have no place in our community, and it is up to all of us to call out this filth when it appears,” their statement read. They expressed hope that Morgan’s felony aggravated assault charge would deter others from similar displays of hate in the city.
