Colin Farrell’s “Hair of the Dog” Remedy Falls Flat on “Minority Report” Set

Hollywood star Colin Farrell recently shared a candid anecdote on “The Late Show With Stephen Colbert,” revealing a less-than-stellar attempt at a “hair of the dog” cure during the filming of the 2002 sci-fi thriller “Minority Report.” The incident, which occurred on the eve of his birthday, highlighted the actor’s struggles with substance abuse at the time.

Farrell recounted a night of revelry that extended into the early morning hours. The phone call that jolted him awake, just as he was settling into bed, informed him he was already ten minutes late for his 6 a.m. pickup for the film set.

Upon his arrival, assistant director David H. Venghaus Jr. reportedly intercepted a clearly disheveled Farrell, stating, “You can’t go to the set like this.” In an attempt to combat his hangover, the young actor requested six Pacifico beers and a pack of Marlboro Reds.

While Farrell admitted to Colbert that this “solution” was not “cool” given his eventual trip to rehab two years later, he conceded, “it worked in the moment.” Or did it?

The true cost of his morning-after remedy became apparent when it took Farrell a staggering 46 takes to deliver a single, albeit complex, line: “I’m sure you’ve all grasped the fundamental paradox of pre-crime methodology.” Farrell quipped that co-star Tom Cruise was “not very happy” with his performance that day.

Farrell eventually sought treatment for substance abuse a few years later, prior to filming “In Bruges” in 2008. He shared at the 2021 Dublin International Film Festival that transitioning to sobriety after years of heavy drinking was a daunting experience. However, he also found “to come home and not to have the buffer support of a few drinks just to calm the nerves, it was a really amazing thing.”
