LACMA Art + Film Gala: The Best and Worst Dressed of the Night
Los Angeles, CA – The City of Angels kicked off November with a star-studded evening of glitz, glamour, and, of course, fashion. On Saturday night, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) played host to its annual Art + Film Gala, a dual-purpose event serving as both a red-carpet spectacle and a crucial fundraiser for the museum.
While many celebrities, including “Wicked” star Cynthia Erivo, graced the red carpet in breathtaking ensembles that turned heads for all the right reasons, a few others unfortunately missed the mark, leaving us scratching ours.
Here’s a breakdown of some of the standout looks – both good and… well, not so good – from the night.
The Hits:
Elle Fanning brought pure old-Hollywood glamour to the event, draped in a baby-blue Gucci gown and matching faux fur coat. The long-sleeved lace gown and floor-length outerwear, paired with a stunning Cartier diamond necklace and an elegant updo, solidified her as one of the night’s best-dressed.
Cynthia Erivo proved that taking a fashion risk can truly pay off. Her white Schiaparelli gown, featuring an off-the-shoulder design adorned with a dramatic gray tulle cape and unique silver embellishments resembling realistic eyes, was a bold and brilliant choice. Silver heels and pearl earrings completed this unforgettable look.
Damson Idris looked impeccably sharp in a perfectly tailored gray Prada suit. The double-breasted jacket and pleated trousers were a masterclass in fit, complemented by lighter gray shoes, a blue button-up, and an exquisite emerald brooch from his own luxury jewelry brand, Didris.
Angela Bassett shimmered and sparkled in a dazzling green Gucci gown. The long-sleeved, sequined dress with sparkling fringe not only moved beautifully on the red carpet but also caught the light, perfectly accentuating her diamond and citrine earrings. A sleek, long ponytail completed her radiant ensemble.
Demi Moore delivered one of the most daring and visually striking looks of the evening. Her sheer Gucci halter gown, covered head-to-toe in vibrant, sequined flowers, created a captivating illusion of being entirely nude beneath the intricate mesh. It was a bold statement that undeniably paid off.
The Misses:
Emma Roberts, while looking undeniably chic in her off-white tweed minidress embellished with pearlescent sequins by Gucci, was unfortunately a tad underdressed for the lavish affair. Despite the retro charm of her white tights, tan pumps, silver clutch, and diamond jewelry, the overall look leaned too casual for the high-octane glamour of the gala.
Kristen Wiig opted for a sheer black lace strapless dress by Rodarte, worn with just black underwear and pointed pumps. While daring, the simplicity of the look felt somewhat unfinished. A bolder statement could have been achieved with more striking diamond jewelry and a vibrant red lip to elevate the ensemble.
Charlie Hunnam‘s black Gucci ensemble, while attempting sophistication, suffered from a lack of tailoring. His trousers were noticeably too long, creating an untidy appearance, and his velvet, monogrammed top felt more casual than appropriate for such a high-profile event. The black horsebit belt, though glamorous, couldn’t salvage the overall fit issues.
Kerry Washington‘s short-sleeved Thom Browne gown was a case of too many conflicting elements. The bodice, crafted from strips of pink and green satin, clashed with a pleated skirt made from a checked fabric and a solid black lining. A more cohesive design, perhaps in a solid color or with fewer contrasting textures, would have been far more impactful.
Salma Hayek donned a sequined green dress that, while flattering to her figure with its V-neckline, bell sleeves, and floor-length skirt, clashed with her chosen accessories. Her black satin purse and a thick diamond and ruby necklace felt disconnected from the dress. Opting for less prominent accessories would have allowed the gown to shine on its own.
Zoey Deutch‘s cream-colored gown was, simply put, underwhelming. The strapless and shapeless design gave the impression of an unfinished garment. Her gold arm cuff also seemed out of place, failing to integrate harmoniously with the rest of the outfit, leaving a rather bland impression.
