Kevin Spacey Opens Up About Post-Scandal Life: “Literally No Home”

Hollywood actor Kevin Spacey, once a titan of the silver screen, has revealed he’s living a nomadic existence out of suitcases and Airbnbs, far from the bright lights of Tinseltown. The two-time Oscar winner, sidelined for nearly a decade by a sex scandal, shared his current plight in a candid interview with The Telegraph, published Wednesday.

While stopping short of labeling himself homeless, Spacey, 66, painted a grim picture of his financial situation, stating, “Not great.” He explained, “I’m living in hotels, I’m living in Airbnbs, I’m going where the work is.

I literally have no home, that’s what I’m attempting to explain.” This comes after he lost his Baltimore home to foreclosure.

Spacey’s interview took place while he was performing standards at a nightclub in Cyprus, a stark contrast to his former life as one of Hollywood’s biggest names. His fall from grace began in 2017 when actor Anthony Rapp accused him of making a sexual advance in 1986, when Rapp was 14 and Spacey 26. Although a civil jury later sided with Spacey in Rapp’s case, the allegations triggered a wave of similar accusations against him.

The “American Beauty” star has acknowledged “being too handsy” and “touching someone sexually in a way that I didn’t know at the time they didn’t want.” In his recent interview, Spacey drew parallels between his situation and the Hollywood blacklist of the red scare era, suggesting that a single influential ally, much like Kirk Douglas’s support for blacklisted writer Dalton Trumbo, could pave his path back to the stage.

“When he (Douglas) said, ‘Dalton Trumbo’s name is going on ‘Spartacus,’ everyone around him said, ‘You’re crazy, you’re going to get cancelled,’” Spacey recounted. “And Kirk Douglas said, ‘You know what, we get to play the hero in movies, but it’s not that simple in life.’

He was willing to stand up and say enough is enough. The moment he did that, the blacklist was over.”

Spacey was a leading figure on the critically acclaimed show “House of Cards” when Rapp’s allegations surfaced during the height of the “Me Too” movement. He was subsequently fired from the show and has since struggled to secure high-profile roles.

The actor believes that a single phone call from a prominent figure could reignite his career. “So, my feeling is if Martin Scorsese or Quentin Tarantino call Evan (Lowenstein, Spacey’s manager) tomorrow, it will be over,” Spacey said.

“I will be incredibly honored and delighted when that level of talent picks up the phone.” He remains optimistic that day, and his redemption, will come, stating, “And I believe it’s going to happen.”

It’s important to note that Spacey has never been found guilty or liable of any sexual crimes or misdeeds in criminal or civil courts. In July 2023, a criminal court in London found him not guilty of allegedly sexually assaulting four men. Additionally, a Massachusetts prosecutor declined to pursue a case against Spacey in 2019 after the son of a former Boston news anchor accused him of sexual assault, with the case faltering due to allegations of deleted messages on the accuser’s iPhone.

The Telegraph reported that a fan at Spacey’s Cyprus performance expressed unwavering support, remarking, “He was acquitted! Isn’t that enough?”
