Dublin Pub’s “60/40” Guinness Blend Stirs the Pot, Dividing Stout Enthusiasts
Dublin, Ireland – A new take on a beloved classic is causing quite a stir across the pond, as a Dublin pub introduces a novel Guinness blend that has some stout purists crying foul and others praising its innovation. Palmerstown House Pub is now serving what they’ve dubbed the “60/40,” a pint composed of 60% Guinness 0.0 and 40% traditional Guinness 4.2%.
In a land where the perfect pour of Guinness is practically a sacred ritual, and debates over “splitting the G” dominate social media, the Palmerstown House Pub is stepping into uncharted territory. Their aim? To offer a lighter, lower-alcohol option that caters to the growing number of patrons seeking low- or non-alcoholic alternatives, without sacrificing the iconic Guinness character.
The pub announced its “60/40” creation on Instagram, inviting patrons to “Try our new ’60/40′ in the Palmerstown House. All of the Guinness character, just a little lighter!
Great for when you’re in the mood for a pint but with a little less alcohol! Just ask for a ’60/40′.”
They also included a responsible drinking reminder, clarifying that while lighter, the blend still contains alcohol, bringing the ABV down from 4.2% to approximately 1.7%. The unique blend is even poured with the traditional two-stage method, with the Guinness Zero taking the first pour.
As expected, reactions to this hybrid beverage have been anything but uniform. Some commenters playfully dubbed it “semi-skimmed Guinness,” while others expressed outright indignation.
Remarks like “Nah, you’re good,” “Ring the Guards. The Guards are to be rang,” and “a load of nonsense” flooded social media.
Further criticisms escalated to “should be illegal,” “a hard no,” “this is just wrong,” and even “this is a crime.”
However, amidst the wave of disapproval, a significant number of supporters emerged to champion the new concept. One fan exclaimed, “I’ve asked for this in a few pubs and been looked at like I was a mentalist!
Great to see you making it an actual thing.” Another commenter challenged the negativity directly, stating, “People crying about people wanting to drink a bit less alcohol or maybe have a couple and still be able to drive.
Nobody is forcing it on you. Drink what you like, just relax and let others drink what they want too.”
Other positive responses included “Rate this,” “Brilliant idea,” and “This is such a good idea!”
Daragh Curran, widely known as The Guinness Guru on social media, believes the entire initiative is a clever marketing ploy. He told The Telegraph, “This is obviously done to go viral and fair play because it obviously works. I know if I make a video about it, it will get clicks and views, so I’ll probably go and make a video trying it, so fair play to them in that sense.”
Whether a stroke of genius or a sacrilege, the “60/40” has certainly ignited a spirited debate, proving that when it comes to Guinness, opinions are as rich and varied as the stout itself.
