Kyiv was subjected to a “massive” overnight missile attack by Russian forces, targeting the city’s energy infrastructure. The Ukrainian Minister of Energy confirmed the widespread nature of the assault.
Kyiv Mayor Vitali Klitschko reported that the attacks resulted in two fatalities and seven injuries. He also stated that several areas were experiencing disruptions to both power and water services. In one part of the city, a residential building caught fire after being struck by falling debris.
“The enemy attack on Kyiv is ongoing,” Klitschko posted on Telegram early Tuesday local time, urging residents of the capital to seek shelter.
This barrage follows weekend negotiations in Switzerland concerning a US-proposed peace plan for Russia and Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy had stated on Monday that efforts were underway to achieve peace “as quickly as possible,” but also cautioned that “Russia will not ease its pressure on Ukraine.”
He emphasized the importance of taking air raid alerts and strike threats seriously, adding, “We clearly understand whom we are dealing with, and all necessary orders have been issued within the Air Force and across all other components of Ukraine’s Defense and Security Forces. We will react.”
The strikes on Kyiv occurred a day after Russia launched over 160 drones into Ukraine. The Ukrainian air force announced that 125 of these drones were either shot down or suppressed, while 37 impacted across 15 different locations. In Ukraine’s northeastern city of Kharkiv, at least four people were killed in that attack, according to the local mayor.
