Senator Jim Justice and Wife Settle Multi-Million Dollar Tax Bill with IRS

CHARLESTON, WV – Senator Jim Justice, R-W.V., and his wife, Cathy Justice, have agreed to a settlement with the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), committing to pay over $5 million in previously unpaid federal income taxes stretching back to 2009. The agreement was reached swiftly after the Department of Justice filed a lawsuit on behalf of the IRS.

Court records filed Monday indicate that the Justice Department initiated legal action earlier the same day, citing repeated unsuccessful attempts by tax collectors to recover the outstanding funds. The complaint stated, “Despite notice and demand for payment of the assessments, [Justice] and Cathy L. Justice have neglected or refused to make full payment of those assessments to the United States.”

Under the terms of the settlement, which awaits a judge’s approval, Senator Justice will be responsible for $5,164,739.75, in addition to “statutory interest and other additions to tax accruing thereafter.” A spokesperson for Senator Justice declined to comment, and his attorneys did not immediately respond to requests for comment.

This recent development follows another tax-related issue for the Justice family. Last month, West Virginia state tax collectors reportedly placed a $1.36 million lien on the Greenbrier Hotel, a luxury resort owned and operated by the family.
