Governor Newsom Unveils Memoir Ahead of Anticipated 2028 Presidential Run

SACRAMENTO, CA – California Governor Gavin Newsom is set to release a new memoir in February 2024, a move that signals his potential bid for the presidency in 2028. Titled Young Man in a Hurry: A Memoir of Discovery, the book promises an intimate look into Newsom’s formative years and his journey into the political arena, positioning him as an “outsider on the insider.”

Co-written with California journalist Mark Arax, the memoir is slated for release on February 24, just months before the conclusion of Newsom’s gubernatorial term. In a promotional video shared on social media, the Governor described the book as a “truly vulnerable” and “painful” endeavor, highlighting a personal narrative of feeling “not quite enough” as a child.

Newsom has been transparent about his presidential aspirations, stating in October that he would make a decision regarding a 2028 run after the 2026 midterm elections. His potential candidacy is expected to further intensify his ongoing verbal sparring with figures from the previous administration, a dynamic that has boosted his popularity among Democratic voters who appreciate his assertive approach.

“A lot of people look at me, the stark white shirt, the blue suit, and yeah, the gelled hair. And they think, ‘Oh I know this guy, I know him better than I’d ever want to know him.’

I get it,” Newsom acknowledged in the video. He expressed hope that the “openness, the honesty” of his writing will resonate with readers, regardless of their current opinions of him.

The memoir’s release could coincide with an official announcement of his presidential campaign, though no such confirmation has been made.

According to its publisher, Penguin Random House, the book delves into Newsom’s deep roots in California, tracing his family’s journey from Ireland six generations ago to his eventual election as Mayor of San Francisco. The description highlights a childhood marked by a stark contrast between his mother’s perseverance through three jobs and his father’s connections to San Francisco society, a dissonance compounded by undiagnosed dyslexia.

Young Man in a Hurry is presented as a narrative that explores the influences shaping Newsom’s political ambitions and his pioneering stance on various social issues. The publisher describes it as a “deeply resilient California story of identity, belonging, and the defining moments that inspired a life in politics,” filled with “intimate family history and written with candor and remarkable personal insight.”
