Olympic Figure Skater Michelle Kwan Welcomes Second Daughter, Della Rose
Olympic medalist and beloved figure skater Michelle Kwan, 45, is celebrating a new addition to her family! Kwan announced on Thursday that she recently welcomed her second daughter, Della Rose Kwan, sharing the joyous news and adorable photos on Instagram.
The announcement featured a series of heartwarming snaps and a video. The first picture showed Kwan tenderly cradling her newborn in the hospital. Another sweet image captured a then-pregnant Kwan and her 3-year-old daughter, Kalista Belle Kwan, enjoying chocolate ice cream in matching red plaid pajamas, with Kwan humorously resting her ice cream carton on her baby bump.
A festive holiday ornament with a picture of Kwan holding Della Rose as Kalista leaned in for a kiss also made an appearance. The final slide was a touching time-lapse video, documenting Kwan’s pregnancy journey in a black dress, culminating in her holding her newest little one.
“Christmas came early,” Kwan gushed in her caption, adding a red heart. “I’m overjoyed to share that our baby girl – Della Rose Kwan – has arrived!”
Kwan expressed the immediate expansion of her heart, stating, “My heart doubled in an instant the moment I held her in my arms, and watching my daughter walk into the hospital to meet her baby sister brought tears to my eyes.”
Reflecting on her journey to motherhood, Kwan, who had previously called Kalista her “miracle” baby after years of trying, acknowledged the challenges. “Getting here again has been its own rollercoaster,” she wrote, expressing gratitude for her partner, family, and medical team. “After more than a decade of hoping, I still can’t quite believe this moment is real.”
The former Olympian also drew parallels between her athletic career and pregnancy, noting how the experience deepened her appreciation for her body’s capabilities.
Kwan concluded her post with a powerful message of solidarity for those navigating fertility challenges. “There were moments of frustration over how little I could control – a humbling reminder that fertility is something none of us can fully predict,” she shared. “To all the moms, moms-to-be, and the women and families dealing with infertility or praying to build a family – I know what you’re going through and I’m hoping you feel loved and supported in every way as you navigate this journey.”
The news was met with an outpouring of congratulations from friends and fellow athletes, including Tara Lipinski, Allyson Felix, and Apollo Ohno, all expressing their joy for Kwan and her growing family.
This announcement mirrors Kwan’s reveal of Kalista’s birth in 2022, where she also shared her pregnancy journey retrospectively and spoke about the “challenging road to motherhood” and her perseverance.
