Hollywood Icon Dick Van Dyke Celebrates 100th Birthday, Shares Secrets to a Long and Joyful Life
The legendary Dick Van Dyke, a name synonymous with laughter and entertainment for decades, officially joined the centenarian club this past Saturday, marking his 100th birthday. The beloved actor, known for his infectious energy and timeless performances, isn’t just celebrating a milestone; he’s also offering a masterclass in longevity, sharing his top tips for a healthy and happy life.
Van Dyke, whose career spans from the iconic “The Dick Van Dyke Show” in the 1960s to beloved films like “Mary Poppins” and “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang,” has always embodied a zest for life. With numerous accolades, including Emmys, Golden Globes, and a Tony Award, his contributions to entertainment are immeasurable. Now, as he enters his second century, he’s distilling his wisdom into actionable advice, detailed in his new book, “100 Rules for Living to 100: An Optimist’s Guide to a Happy Life.”
Here’s a look at the centenarian’s guide to a vibrant life:
1. Consistent Exercise is Non-Negotiable
Forget slowing down; Van Dyke credits his enduring vitality to a consistent exercise routine. During a recent appearance on Ted Danson’s podcast, “Where Everybody Knows Your Name,” Van Dyke revealed he hits the gym three times a week. “I’ve always exercised,” he stated, adding, “I think that’s why I’m not stove-up like my equals.”
Danson himself recounted witnessing Van Dyke’s impressive gym regimen, noting how the actor would “literally dance” between machines during his circuit training. Van Dyke’s commitment extends beyond the gym, as Danson recalled the star’s routine of working out, swimming laps, and then taking a nap. These days, Van Dyke focuses on stretching and yoga to maintain his flexibility and strength.
2. Keep Your Mind Sharp with “Jeopardy!”
While Van Dyke admits his short-term memory isn’t what it once was, he insists he still has “his marbles” – and credits “Jeopardy!” with keeping his brain agile.
In his new book, he shares, “I used to do the crossword religiously for years (in pen), and now it’s ‘Jeopardy!’ that keeps me sharp, though Arlene always has the answer before I do,” referring to his wife, Arlene Silver.
The demands of his career as an entertainer required a keen memory, from memorizing lines to countless songs. Van Dyke notes that while it might take a few more run-throughs now, he can still pick up new material with ease. He also attributes his good brain health, in part, to cutting alcohol from his diet.
3. Embrace a Positive Outlook
Throughout his illustrious career, Van Dyke has played many characters, including older gentlemen like Mr. Dawes Sr. in “Mary Poppins.” Now, from the authentic perspective of a centenarian, he reflects on those roles and the realities of aging.
Despite the frustrations that can accompany physical and social changes, coupled with global uncertainties, Van Dyke emphasizes the critical importance of maintaining a positive mindset. “I’ve made it to one hundred, in no small part, because I have stubbornly refused to give in to the bad stuff in life: failure and defeats, personal losses, loneliness and bitterness, the physical and emotional pains of aging. Because, as I see it, to do that would be to throw in the towel on life itself.”
Instead, Van Dyke views life as a “giant playground,” embracing the experience with what he describes as a “full-on bear hug.” His philosophy is a powerful reminder that a resilient spirit and a joyful approach can indeed lead to a long and fulfilling life.
