UFC Lightweight Champion Ilia Topuria has announced he will step away from the octagon for at least the first half of 2026 to address a serious personal matter involving alleged extortion and fabricated domestic violence claims.
Topuria, who boasts an undefeated 17-0 career record and a 9-0 run since joining the UFC, secured the Lightweight Championship in June after defeating Charles Oliveira. UFC President Dana White confirmed Topuria will retain his title during his absence.
In a statement released Monday, Topuria revealed he has been facing “severe and unacceptable pressure,” including threats to disseminate false allegations of domestic abuse unless financial demands were met. He firmly stated these allegations are “entirely unfounded.”
“The truth is not a matter of opinion – it is a matter of evidence,” Topuria asserted. He further explained that all pertinent evidence, including audio recordings, written communications, witness statements, and video material, has been meticulously preserved and submitted to judicial authorities. Legal action is being pursued for attempted extortion, falsification of evidence, misappropriation of funds and personal property, and multiple threats.
Topuria initially chose to remain silent to safeguard his family’s privacy but felt compelled to speak out to prevent “false narratives from taking hold.” He emphasized his confidence in the legal system, stating, “Today, I am stepping forward not only for my family and myself, but also to demonstrate that no one should be forced to yield to intimidation, manipulation, or fear.”
He added that those familiar with him can attest to his consistent adherence to discipline, respect, and integrity throughout his life and career, and that he has never engaged in violence. Topuria will refrain from further comment until legal proceedings are concluded.
Ilia Topuria was ranked No. 2 in the UFC’s pound-for-pound standings. The timeline for his return to competition remains uncertain.
