Sydney Mourns Youngest Victim of Bondi Beach Hanukkah Attack
SYDNEY, Australia – Hundreds of heartbroken mourners gathered in Sydney on Thursday to bid a final farewell to 10-year-old Matilda, the youngest victim of the horrific mass shooting that unfolded during a Hanukkah celebration at Bondi Beach over the weekend.
A somber atmosphere permeated the synagogue as a small, white coffin was slowly carried out. Attendees, many clutching teddy bears and colorful, heart-shaped balloons, openly wept and embraced, offering comfort to one another in their shared grief.
Matilda’s family, seeking a “good life,” had recently relocated to Australia from Ukraine, a rabbi shared with The Associated Press. Her mother revealed to ABC News that a cherished photo of Matilda in a yellow dress with a painted face was taken on the very day she tragically lost her life.
Described by a teacher in an online fundraiser as a “bright, joyful, and spirited child who brought light to everyone around her,” Matilda’s last name has not been publicly released.
Matilda was among 15 individuals killed when two gunmen opened fire at the Hanukkah celebration in what authorities have labeled an antisemitic terror attack. Over 40 others sustained injuries in the brutal incident. One of the gunmen was killed at the scene, while the second has been apprehended and is currently facing charges.
