SALT LAKE CITY, UT – A somber gathering turned to tragedy Wednesday evening after a shooting outside a funeral service left two people dead and six others injured. The incident, which occurred shortly after 7:30 p.m. local time, prompted a swift police response and an ongoing manhunt for those responsible.
According to Salt Lake City Police Department Public Information Officer Glen Mills, no suspects are currently in custody. Police were called to a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel on Redwood Road where a funeral was underway. An altercation reportedly broke out in the parking lot, leading to shots being fired.
Of the six surviving victims, three are in critical condition, while the condition of the other three remains unknown. Authorities are still working to determine whether there was one shooter or multiple individuals involved.
Sam Penrod, a spokesperson for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, issued a statement acknowledging the “serious incident” that transpired outside the meetinghouse during a memorial service. “We extend prayers for all who have been impacted by this tragedy and express deep concern that any sacred space intended for worship should be subjected to violence of any kind,” Penrod stated.
