Ireland Braces for Extended Fog Episode as Temperatures Fluctuate

Dublin, Ireland – Just as Ireland was beginning to thaw from its initial cold snap of the year, a new atmospheric event is set to blanket the nation: an unusually prolonged period of dense fog. While milder conditions briefly offered a reprieve, they were quickly followed by torrential rain, setting the stage for highly changeable weather patterns.

Met Éireann, the national weather service, indicates that these fluctuating conditions will persist into early next week. Temperatures are poised to drop significantly once more, with daytime highs struggling to reach double digits and nighttime lows potentially dipping to a frosty -2°C.

However, it’s not merely the typical damp and chilly weather that residents need to prepare for. Met Éireann has issued a warning regarding an “unusual atmospheric occurrence” expected to begin tonight and linger across the country for the next four days.

The current weather pattern is creating ideal conditions for thick fog, particularly during nighttime hours and early mornings. Gentle southeasterly or variable winds, combined with still and clear nights, are expected to trigger this extended fog episode. While fog itself is not uncommon, its prolonged duration-anticipated for Saturday, Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday-is noteworthy, as reported by the Irish Mirror.

To assist residents with their planning, Met Éireann has provided a detailed day-by-day forecast:

Saturday Night: Largely dry, though a few showers are possible, mainly in the east and southeast. Light southeasterly or variable breezes will contribute to the development of dense fog in certain areas. Lowest temperatures are expected to range from -1°C to 4°C.

Sunday: Fog will gradually clear from most regions by Sunday morning. Many areas will experience a dry day with bright or sunny spells and only occasional showers.

Towards the evening, outbreaks of rain will develop in the west and southwest. Highest temperatures will be between 5°C and 9°C, with light to moderate southerly winds becoming fresher in the west during the evening.

Sunday Night: Cloud will increase as outbreaks of rain and drizzle gradually extend eastwards across the country. Lowest temperatures will be 1°C to 5°C, accompanied by moderate, occasionally fresh south or southeast winds, which will ease later in the night.

Monday: Mostly cloudy initially, with outbreaks of rain and drizzle becoming largely confined to the north and east by early afternoon as drier and brighter conditions extend from the west. Highest temperatures will be 5°C to 9°C in mostly light variable breezes.

Monday Night: Cloud along with outbreaks of rain and drizzle in the north will clear, leading to largely dry, clear, and cold conditions for a time, with fog developing in light southeasterly or variable breezes. Lowest temperatures will range from -2°C to 3°C. Towards morning, outbreaks of rain will develop in the southwest with freshening winds.

Tuesday: Fog will clear through Tuesday morning as it becomes breezy. Outbreaks of rain, potentially heavy at times, and fresh and gusty southeasterly winds will gradually extend northeastwards, though northern areas may remain dry until the evening. Highest temperatures will be 6°C to 9°C.

Wednesday: Current indications suggest a breezy or windy day with outbreaks of rain, heavy at times. Highest temperatures are expected to be 7°C to 10°C, accompanied by fresh to strong and gusty southeasterly winds.

Residents are advised to exercise caution, particularly when traveling, due to reduced visibility from the anticipated dense fog.
