Mel C on Parenting and the Enduring Spice Girls Bond

Los Angeles, CA – Former Spice Girl Melanie “Mel C” Chisholm, also known as Sporty Spice, has opened up about her parenting philosophy, revealing a conscious decision to keep her daughter, Scarlet, out of the spotlight – a path she acknowledges differs from some of her famous friends.

In a recent interview, Chisholm expressed her relief that Scarlet isn’t eager to follow in her pop star footsteps, noting the challenges of growing up in a successful parent’s shadow. “It’s so hard to be in the shadow of a parent who’s had success,” she stated.

Chisholm elaborated on her choice to shield Scarlet from public life, a decision she made early in her daughter’s life. “The thing is, with Scarlet, she’s not in the public eye.

I made that conscious decision when she was a baby,” Mel C explained. While acknowledging that friends handle fame and their children’s exposure “very differently” – with “no judgment at all” – she admitted her own experiences with fame influenced her decision.

“For me, probably because of my experiences with fame, I didn’t feel comfortable making that decision for her.”

Her comments come amidst recent headlines involving fellow Spice Girl Victoria Beckham, whose son, Brooklyn, publicly aired grievances against his parents, David and Victoria Beckham, in a series of social media posts. Brooklyn, 26, alleged that his parents had made persistent efforts to undermine his relationship with his partner, stating, “My parents have been trying endlessly to ruin my relationship since before my wedding, and it hasn’t stopped.” He further claimed to have been “silent for years” and was now speaking out to “tell the truth about only some of the lies that have been printed.”

Beyond parenting, Mel C also offered a glimpse into the enduring bond among the Spice Girls. Describing their reunions, she likened their dynamic to family.

“It’s more fun when it’s just us, and we haven’t changed. It’s like family.

You know when you go home, and you just fall back into those roles?”

She emphasized that their connection transcends mere friendship. “People say, ‘Oh, are you still friends?’

It’s more than that. It runs so much deeper,” she shared, adding with affection, “We drive each other mad, you know?

Someone is often acting up, and they have to get pulled back into line, but we’d probably go [to war] for each other.”

While the Spice Girls – Victoria Beckham, Mel B, Emma Bunton, Geri Halliwell, and Mel C – continue to gather for personal milestones, such as Bunton’s recent 50th birthday, their last collective stage performance was in 2019. Mel C expressed a strong desire for the group to reunite professionally, stating her belief that “it’s a public disservice for the Spice Girls to not get back on stage together.” She humorously added, “You’re speaking to the wrong person, because I’m there, you know?”
