Norwalk Firefighters Stage Daring Rescue of Swan Stuck on Ice
Norwalk, CT – A majestic swan found itself in a slippery situation this week, prompting a swift and successful rescue operation by the Norwalk Fire Department. The elegant bird became trapped on the frozen Norwalk River, drawing the attention of concerned citizens and eventually, local first responders.
The incident unfolded on Tuesday near the Wall Street Bridge, where crews were dispatched after reports surfaced of a swan unable to free itself from the icy grip of the river. Without hesitation, Norwalk firefighters sprang into action, donning specialized cold-water rescue suits to brave the frigid conditions.
With careful precision, the brave rescuers ventured onto the ice-covered river, making their way towards the stranded swan. Their efforts paid off, as they safely freed the bird from the surrounding ice and brought it to shore without incident.
Following its dramatic rescue, the swan was transported to the VCA Veterinary Referral and Emergency Center for examination and care. Veterinarian Melissa Salgado reported that the swan was in stable condition upon arrival.
“There were blocks of ice attached to him which we had to melt off using warm water, and he was given food and water,” Salgado explained. “He’s doing well and warming up.
He has no serious wounds.”
The swan is expected to make a full recovery and will be released back into its natural habitat once given the all-clear by veterinarians. This heartwarming rescue serves as a testament to the dedication and compassion of Norwalk’s firefighters, who are always ready to lend a helping hand, even to our feathered friends.
