Presidents Day: What’s Open, What’s Closed in Our Community

Monday, February 16, marks Presidents Day, a federal holiday originally established to honor the birthday of the nation’s first president, George Washington. While commonly known as Presidents Day, its official designation remains Washington’s Birthday. As many in our community prepare for the long weekend, it’s important to know which local businesses and services will be operating.

Presidents Day is one of 12 federal holidays, meaning some closures and service suspensions are to be expected. Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate your errands and plans:

Retail and Groceries: Business as Usual for Most

Good news for those needing to stock up or do some shopping: most major retailers and grocery stores will be open.

  • Target: A spokesperson confirmed that Target stores will operate during their regular hours.
  • Grocery Stores: You can count on your favorite grocery spots like Aldi, Food Lion, Giant Food, Trader Joe’s, and Wegmans to be open for your Monday shopping needs.

Dining Out: Fast Food and Restaurants Ready to Serve

If you’re planning to grab a bite, most fast-food chains and restaurants will be welcoming customers. This includes popular spots like Burger King, Dunkin’, Chick-fil-A, IHOP, Taco Bell, and Subway. However, it’s always a good idea to call ahead to your specific location, as hours can sometimes vary.

Pharmacy Needs: CVS Open

Should you need to visit a drugstore, CVS Pharmacy locations will be open on Presidents Day, according to a company spokesperson.

Financial Institutions: Banks and Stock Market Closed

  • Banks: Most banks will be closed in observance of the Federal Reserve holiday. While physical branches will be shuttered, customers can still utilize online banking for certain transactions.
  • Stock Market: The U.S. stock market, including the New York Stock Exchange, will be closed for “Washington’s Birthday.” Trading is set to resume on Tuesday, February 17.

Mail and Package Delivery: A Mixed Bag

  • U.S. Postal Service (USPS): Don’t expect your mail to be delivered on Monday, and USPS retail locations will also be closed.

While physical services are suspended, you can still access some USPS services and products through their website and self-service kiosks.

  • UPS and FedEx: Both UPS and FedEx will be making deliveries on Presidents Day.

However, FedEx advises customers that there might be “early on-call pickups and drop box pickups (including drop box closures) in some areas,” so it’s wise to plan accordingly if you have a time-sensitive shipment.

Stay informed and enjoy your Presidents Day!
