Zuckerberg’s Entourage Raises Eyebrows (and a Judge’s Ire) with Smart Glasses in Court
Los Angeles, CA – Mark Zuckerberg’s arrival at the Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday morning for a high-stakes trial brought with it an unexpected fashion statement and a swift rebuke from the bench: Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses.
While Zuckerberg himself opted for a classic navy suit and tie, members of his entourage, including longtime executive assistant Andrea Besmehn and an unidentified man, were spotted sporting the AI-powered eyewear. The accessory choice, however, quickly became a point of contention inside the courtroom.
The presiding judge wasted no time in addressing the potential for recording devices, issuing a stern warning that anyone using glasses to record proceedings would be “held in contempt of court,” according to reports. This isn’t the first time Meta’s smart glasses have caused a stir in legal settings. Last year, a New York Times reporter faced similar reprimand for wearing them during a federal trial involving Meta.
Zuckerberg’s court appearance is part of an ongoing trial accusing major social media companies, including Meta and Google’s YouTube, of creating addictive products that harm young users. The lawsuit centers on a 20-year-old plaintiff who alleges that Instagram and YouTube exacerbated her depression and suicidal thoughts. TikTok and Snap have already settled similar claims.
The trial is focusing on design features that plaintiffs argue are intentionally crafted to keep teenagers endlessly scrolling. Instagram chief Adam Mosseri previously testified, and Zuckerberg’s testimony follows his.
Interestingly, the Meta Ray-Ban smart glasses have emerged as a surprising success for the company. During a recent earnings call, Zuckerberg revealed that sales more than tripled in 2025, drawing comparisons to the monumental shift from flip phones to smartphones. Meta is increasingly positioning these glasses as a key component of its AI strategy, allowing users to not only capture photos and play music but also interact with Meta AI, its artificial intelligence assistant, to ask questions about their surroundings.
Adding another layer of intrigue, the New York Times recently reported that Meta is exploring the addition of facial recognition technology to its smart glasses, a development that could spark further debate and privacy concerns.
