Lamborghini Pulls the Plug on All-Electric Lanzador, Pivots to Hybrids

Sant’Agata Bolognese, Italy – In a move that signals a broader industry re-evaluation of electric vehicle (EV) strategies, luxury automaker Lamborghini has quietly shelved its all-electric Lanzador supercar, which was first unveiled in 2023. The decision, confirmed this week by CEO Stephan Winkelmann, marks a significant shift for the brand as it recalibrates its approach to electrification.

Winkelmann minced no words regarding the cancellation, stating that EV development was becoming “an expensive hobby.” This sentiment reflects the substantial research and development costs associated with electric powertrains, coupled with a surprising lack of demand from Lamborghini’s affluent customer base for fully electric vehicles.

Instead of pursuing an all-electric future, Lamborghini will now focus on integrating plug-in hybrid (PHEV) technology across its entire vehicle lineup by 2030. The Lanzador itself is reportedly slated for a rebirth as a PHEV, a move that analysts suggest might better align with the brand’s core identity, which is deeply rooted in the visceral experience of powerful, roaring engines. Winkelmann acknowledged that EVs “struggle to deliver this specific emotional connection,” a critical element for a brand synonymous with high-performance sound and feel.

The company’s decision appears to be heavily influenced by market realities. Winkelmann revealed that the “acceptance curve” for battery-powered cars among Lamborghini’s wealthy clientele is “close to zero.”

This lack of enthusiasm stands in stark contrast to the company’s recent record-breaking performance, delivering 10,747 cars in 2025. This success was largely driven by its existing PHEV lineup, including the Urus, Temerario, and Revuelto, which have proven popular with buyers.

Lamborghini is not alone in this strategic pivot. Other major automakers, such as Stellantis and Ford, have also reported significant financial setbacks related to their EV initiatives, underscoring a potential slowdown in the electric gold rush, particularly within the high-end luxury vehicle segment.

While the all-electric Lamborghini Lanzador may be off the table for now, Winkelmann did use the phrase “never say never,” leaving open the possibility of a future electric model. However, for the foreseeable future, those seeking the iconic “raging bull” experience will find it in the form of powerful hybrid technology rather than a silent electric motor.
