Cottage Cheese Recall Issued for Walmart Stores in 24 States

Walmart shoppers in nearly half the country should check their refrigerators: certain Great Value brand cottage cheese products are being recalled due to concerns over inadequate pasteurization. Saputo Cheese USA Inc. initiated the recall after discovering that some liquid dairy ingredients may not have met regulatory standards for pasteurization.

The issue came to light during a “pasteurizer troubleshooting exercise” conducted by Saputo Cheese USA Inc. in conjunction with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, as announced by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on Wednesday.

The recall specifically targets Great Value-branded cottage cheese sold in white tubs with white lids. These products were distributed between February 17 and February 20 to Walmart stores and distribution centers across 24 states: Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

While no illnesses have been reported to date, improperly pasteurized dairy products can pose significant health risks, particularly for vulnerable populations such as young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems, according to the FDA.

Officials have confirmed that the affected pasteurizer has since been repaired, verified, and sealed by California food safety authorities. No other products from the facility are believed to be impacted by this issue.

Consumers who have purchased the recalled Great Value cottage cheese are advised to refrain from consuming it.
