British Interior Designer Trapped in Dubai Amidst Escalating Regional Tensions

Kunal Trehan, a 42-year-old luxury interior designer from Cheshire, England, found his work trip to Dubai abruptly extended by unforeseen regional conflict. What began as a business expansion venture into the UAE quickly turned into a harrowing experience, leaving him and his partner stranded and facing an uncertain return home.

Trehan and his partner arrived in Dubai on February 20th, with their flight back to the UK scheduled for February 28th. However, their plans were dramatically altered on Saturday when what they initially believed to be demolition sounds turned out to be distant explosions. “My partner and I assumed it was demolition until an hour later, when people started messaging me on WhatsApp asking if I was OK,” Trehan recounted.

A quick check of the Qatar Airways app confirmed his fears: their flight was canceled. The situation escalated rapidly with more explosions and plumes of smoke visible from their beachside hotel. Hotel staff soon advised guests to retreat from balconies and close curtains as missiles were reportedly seen streaking across the night sky.

Emergency Alerts and Basement Shelter

The gravity of the situation became undeniably clear at midnight when an emergency government alert blared across their phones, instructing them to take shelter. Hotel staff then directed guests to the hotel basement, a concrete-floored area where people, including the elderly, sought refuge.

“Even the staff, many of whom are locals, were alarmed. They’ve told us that they haven’t experienced this before,” Trehan noted, highlighting the unusual nature of the events.

After three hours in the basement, Trehan and his partner returned to their room, only to be awakened by another explosion the following morning. The hotel has since advised guests to remain indoors, emphasizing that while they may not be direct targets, they are caught in the “crossfire of a war.” In a proactive measure, Trehan and his partner requested a first-floor room, hoping for quicker evacuation if necessary.

Financial Strain and Lingering Uncertainty

Despite the immediate danger, Trehan acknowledges their relative good fortune. They possess the financial means to continue paying for their hotel, which costs approximately $670 per night, in addition to daily expenses for meals and necessities. However, the question of reimbursement from their travel insurance remains unanswered.

“We are incredibly fortunate, yet completely out of control, and have no idea when we will be able to get home,” Trehan expressed, reflecting the mix of gratitude and anxiety. Their friends and family back home remain deeply concerned, despite reassurances of their safety.

As of now, Trehan and his partner are hoping for a flight out on Thursday, but with the situation remaining fluid, nothing is guaranteed. Their experience serves as a stark reminder of how quickly travel plans can be upended by geopolitical events, leaving individuals in a precarious and uncertain limbo.
