“Marshals” Premiere Shocks Fans with Major Dutton Family Death
Fans of the “Yellowstone” universe were met with a heartbreaking surprise during the March 1 premiere of the spinoff series “Marshals,” as a beloved member of the Dutton family was tragically killed off. The first episode, titled “Piya Wiconi,” revealed the death of Monica Dutton, portrayed by Kelsey Asbille in “Yellowstone.”
The somber news was delivered as Luke Grimes’ character, Kayce Dutton, visited Monica’s grave. “I miss you, baby.
I miss my wife – my best friend. My only friend,” Kayce lamented, expressing the deep void left by her absence.
Grimes shared with Parade that this poignant scene at Monica’s grave was his favorite in the pilot. He likened Kayce and Monica’s relationship to a modern-day “Romeo and Juliet,” emphasizing that even without her physical presence, Monica remains a significant part of the story.
“She’s very much a part of the show and very much honored, as people will see, throughout the first season. She gets revisited a lot,” Grimes explained.
The episode disclosed that Monica succumbed to a battle with cancer, potentially linked to toxic pollution on the Indian reservation where she, Kayce, and their son Tate resided.
Grimes admitted he was “heartbroken” to learn of Monica’s fate in the spinoff, even having to steel himself to call Asbille with the news. “It felt like, ‘I don’t even know what that would look like doing it without her, what that would feel like.’
Kelsey’s become one of my best friends. She’s the coolest actor I’ve ever worked with,” he told TV Insider.
After a “great conversation,” Grimes noted that Asbille “handled it like a pro and totally understood.”
The sudden death left many fans reeling, with social media lighting up with reactions. “Crazy killing off Monica 😢 totally surprised me,” one fan commented on the official Marshals Instagram. Another user inquired, “Can someone please explain to me what happened to Monica😢😢😢.”
Some viewers even expressed their disappointment to the point of boycotting the series. “Not going to watch.
I miss Monica. Without Monica this show is a dud,” a fan declared, while another added, “I’m so bummed they killed Monica’s character 😢.”
The unexpected turn has undoubtedly left a lasting impression on the “Yellowstone” faithful.
