Seventh U.S. Service Member Identified Amidst Ongoing Iran Conflict
**WASHINGTON D.C. ** – The Department of Defense on Monday confirmed the death of another U.S. service member, bringing the total number of American casualties in the conflict with Iran to seven.
Sgt. Benjamin Pennington, 26, succumbed to injuries on Sunday, sustained during a March 1 retaliatory strike by Iran on U.S. troops stationed at Prince Sultan Air Base in Saudi Arabia.
Sgt. Pennington, a native of Glendale, Kentucky, enlisted in the Army in 2017 as a supply specialist.
He was assigned to the 1st Space Battalion, 1st Space Brigade at Fort Carson, Colorado, and was reportedly working at a strategic radar installation crucial for early warning against incoming missile threats. The Army has announced his posthumous promotion to staff sergeant.
Lt. Gen.
Sean A. Gainey, the top officer for Army Space and Missile Defense Command, expressed profound condolences.
“He gave the ultimate sacrifice for the country he loved,” Gainey stated. “That makes him nothing less than a hero, and he will always be remembered that way.
We extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and friends.”
This news follows President Donald Trump’s attendance on Saturday at the dignified transfer of six other American service members killed in the conflict’s initial hours, after an Iranian drone attack in Kuwait. All six were killed in the same incident.
As the nation mourns these losses, both President Trump and senior Pentagon officials have been preparing the public for the likelihood of further casualties. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, in an interview with “60 Minutes” on Sunday, reiterated this somber reality.
“The president’s been right to say there will be casualties,” Hegseth said. “Things like this don’t happen without casualties.
There will be more casualties.”
Hegseth framed these sacrifices as a somber, yet familiar, aspect of war for a nation with a long history of military engagement in the Middle East. “Especially our generation knows what it’s like to see Americans come home in caskets,” he remarked.
“But that doesn’t weaken us one bit. It stiffens our spine and our resolve to say this is a fight we will finish.”
