Mountain Biker Dies After Rattlesnake Encounter in Irvine

Irvine, CA – A tragic incident has claimed the life of a Costa Mesa man following a rattlesnake bite he sustained while mountain biking in an Irvine nature preserve. Julian Enrique Hernandez, 25, passed away on March 4th after a month-long hospitalization, according to the Orange County Coroner’s Office.

The initial emergency occurred around 11 a.m. on February 1st at the Quail Hill Trailhead, a popular recreational spot near the Quail Hill Community Center. The Irvine Police Department confirmed that Hernandez was bitten by a rattlesnake while on his bike. The precise circumstances surrounding the bite remain unclear.

The Orange County Fire Authority (OCFA) swiftly responded to the scene, and Hernandez was transported to a local hospital in critical condition. He remained in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) for over 30 days as his family held onto hope for his recovery.

A GoFundMe page, verified by his brother, shared the family’s journey, noting that Julian’s recovery was “expected to take much longer than anticipated.” In a heartbreaking update, the family wrote, “Julian was 25.

He was strong and healthy. He was alive when he got to the hospital.

His whole family was there, advocating for him every step of the way. Julian did not survive.”

Following his death, the Hernandez family informed CBS News Los Angeles via text message that they have initiated an independent third-party autopsy. While declining on-camera interviews, they described Julian as a “deeply loved son, brother, boyfriend, and friend.”

Fatalities from rattlesnake bites are statistically rare in the United States. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reports approximately 8,000 venomous snake bites annually, with only about five resulting in death.

Local authorities are urging trail users at Quail Hill and other Irvine parks to exercise heightened vigilance as warmer weather increases snake activity. The Irvine Police and OCFA recommend several safety precautions:

  • **Staying on designated paths. **
  • **Maintaining a distance of at least 10 feet from any snake encountered. **
  • **Wearing protective gear and avoiding the use of headphones to ensure audible warnings, such as the distinct “rattle,” can be heard. **
