New Details Emerge in Nancy Guthrie Abduction Case: Masked Man Spotted Weeks Prior

Tucson, AZ – A masked individual, believed to be connected to the apparent abduction of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of “Today” co-host Savannah Guthrie, was reportedly seen on her front steps three weeks before her disappearance. This new detail, according to multiple law enforcement sources, adds another layer to the ongoing investigation into the incident that occurred in the early hours of February 1st.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department believes Guthrie was abducted against her will. The FBI has released surveillance images from her Nest doorbell camera, one of which, as previously reported, was captured on a different date than the others.

This has led authorities to request home security footage from neighbors across a wider timeframe, including the entire month of January, specifically the night of January 11th, and the critical hours between January 31st and February 2nd. News Nation also reported last week that January 24th is a date of interest, citing a neighbor asked for video from that day.

A retired NYPD inspector and Fox News contributor commented on the expanded search for footage, suggesting it could indicate investigators are either trying to track a suspect’s movements or are honing in on unusual forensic activity.

The masked suspect remains unidentified but has been described by FBI analysts as being approximately 5 feet, 9 inches to 5 feet, 10 inches tall with a medium build. He was seen wearing a 25-liter, black Ozark Trail backpack. While not officially identified, he also appeared to be wearing a holstered pistol.

Intriguingly, the January 11th date has surfaced repeatedly. Residents using the Ring Neighbors app were initially asked to check video from 9 p.m. to midnight on that date.

Two law enforcement sources indicate that the masked man was pictured on January 11th without the holster or backpack. An unofficial post on the Ring Neighbors app also mentioned a “suspicious vehicle” near Guthrie’s home on Via Entrada around 10 a.m. on January 31st, for which no description was provided.

Local homeowner Aldine Meister recalled seeing a “strange man” in the neighborhood in mid-January, describing him as not having “typical walking gear on” and his “hat pulled really far over his eyes.” She noted this sighting occurred after January 8th and approximately three weeks before Guthrie’s abduction, suggesting it “could’ve been the 11th.”

Michele Young, another longtime resident of the Catalina Foothills area, confirmed that investigators, including the FBI and Sheriff’s department, mentioned January 11th during one of their five visits to her home.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has refrained from publicly discussing specific dates but continues to urge residents to submit any video footage of suspicious activity, individuals, or vehicles recorded between January 1st and February 2nd.

The possibility of multiple individuals being involved in the abduction has not been ruled out by the Sheriff’s department. While two men were previously detained and released without charges, no suspects, persons of interest, or vehicles have been publicly identified in connection with the case.

A combined reward exceeding $1.2 million is being offered for information leading to Nancy Guthrie’s recovery. Anyone with relevant information is encouraged to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI.
