Sarah Michelle Gellar’s Secret to a Happy Marriage? It’s All About the Bathrooms (and Boundaries!)
Hollywood power couple Sarah Michelle Gellar and Freddie Prinze Jr. have been making their marriage work since 2002, a feat that’s practically a lifetime in Tinseltown. And according to Gellar, the secret sauce might be simpler than you think: separate bathrooms!
In a recent interview with People, the “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” icon, 48, spilled the beans on her household hack for avoiding those pesky little spats that can plague any relationship. “There just has to be another bathroom available,” she quipped, adding that a little extra privacy can “stop a lot of petty fighting.” So, while “one bedroom, two bathrooms” might sound fancy, Gellar assures us it’s more about the availability of an alternative than a palatial setup.
But it’s not just about the plumbing. Gellar, who met Prinze Jr. on the set of “I Know What You Did Last Summer” and shares two children with him, also emphasizes the importance of a clear line between her public and private life.
“I always say I’m two people: I’m Sarah Michelle Gellar and I’m Sarah Prinze,” she explained. “They’re different people.”
The “Sarah Prinze” version, she notes, enjoys a “quieter life and a private life” with her husband.
Gellar also stressed that lasting relationships, like anything truly valuable, require effort. “You have to be willing to work,” she said.
“And that goes for relationships, friendships, anything. You have to put the work in.”
She drew a parallel to our modern “disposable society,” where it’s often easier to replace things than to repair them. “I think because of that, we don’t work as hard at things because it’s easier just to ‘get a new one,'” she mused.
“You have to put the work in. You have to carve out the time.”
This isn’t the first time Gellar has championed the power of separate facilities. Back in 2017, she told Harry Connick Jr. that not everything needs to be shared, even suggesting a separate credit card for certain purchases (or a gaming card for the guys!). She reiterated this simple philosophy on “Today with Jenna & Friends” in April, stating, “It’s that simple.”
And it seems Gellar isn’t alone in her pursuit of personal space within a partnership. Other celebs, including Carson Daly and Barbara Corcoran, have also embraced strategies like “sleep divorce” or separate bedrooms to keep their relationships thriving. So, whether it’s an extra bathroom or a whole different bedroom, it seems a little breathing room might just be the secret ingredient for a long and happy love story.
