Newborn Tragically Dies After Dog Attack in Novi Home
NOVI, MI – A five-day-old infant girl has died after being attacked by a stray dog recently taken in by her family in their Novi home. The tragic incident occurred on March 17, when police responded to a report of an injured infant around 8:30 a.m.
The baby, who has not been identified, was found with multiple puncture wounds consistent with an animal attack. According to authorities, the newborn was sleeping in her bassinet when the mixed-breed dog reportedly knocked it over and attacked her. She was transported to a local hospital, where she was pronounced dead.
Linda French, the baby’s grandmother, expressed her dismay, stating, “That baby should never have been left alone.” She further commented on the family’s decision to bring in a stray, saying, “They don’t know that dog.
They don’t know where he came from.” French also revealed that the dog had previously “lunged” at the baby.
Another relative, identified as Ellyn, told a news outlet that the baby’s father believes the dog attacked the infant. However, she noted the dog had been around other toddlers without incident, adding, “We don’t know what actually happened other than the dog snapped out right in front of everyone.”
Novi Police Commander Bob Manar confirmed that a family member reported finding the infant injured. The dog involved in the attack has since been euthanized.
Police have not disclosed who was present in the home at the time of the incident, and it remains unclear whether any charges will be filed.
