Search for Nancy Guthrie Intensifies as Focus Narrows to Local Suspect

The extensive search for Nancy Guthrie, the 84-year-old mother of Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, continues to center on the Tucson area, with recent insights suggesting authorities may be closing in on a local suspect. Guthrie vanished from her home just north of Tucson, Arizona, on February 1, prompting a widespread investigation into her disappearance, which police are treating as a kidnapping.

Journalist Brian Entin, host of “Brian Entin Investigates,” recently highlighted what he described as “interesting” parallels between the Guthrie family’s public statements and theories held by law enforcement. On March 21, marking 50 days since Nancy Guthrie went missing, Savannah and her relatives released a statement asserting, “We continue to believe it is Tucsonans, and the greater southern Arizona community, that hold the key to finding a resolution in this case.” This statement followed a recent update revealing that a person fled the neighborhood within days of the presumed kidnapping.

Entin noted that this sentiment aligns with information he has received from numerous law enforcement sources and experts “since the beginning” of the investigation. “There is this belief that whoever did this is from the Tucson area,” Entin stated, adding that some believe the suspect “could even be from the neighborhood.” The journalist found the family’s specific mention of Tucsonans “kind of creepy,” suggesting, “The person who did this may be right under the fingertips of police.”

Nancy Guthrie was last seen at her property around 9:30 p.m. on January 31 and was reported missing the following day after failing to attend her local Sunday mass. The Pima County Sheriff’s office quickly declared her home a “crime scene” following the discovery of concerning evidence inside. Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed early in the investigation, “We do believe that Nancy was taken from her home against her will.”

Weeks after the incident, the FBI released surveillance footage from Nancy Guthrie’s Google Nest camera, showing a potential subject approaching her front door. The individual was seen wearing dark gloves, a zip-up hoodie, sweats, a backpack, and a balaclava. Despite this visual, authorities have not yet publicly named a person of interest or suspect in the case.

Savannah Guthrie broke her silence on her mother’s disappearance on February 2 and has remained a vocal advocate for her recovery, announcing a reward of up to $1 million for information leading to her mother’s safe return. She has not returned to her role on the Today show since her mother went missing.

The case has drawn comparisons to other complex disappearances, including the recent mysterious vanishing of an Air Force general, which Entin noted shares several chilling similarities. The community remains hopeful for a swift resolution in Nancy Guthrie’s case.
