Former Columbus Teacher Pleads Guilty in Sexual Relationship with Student
Columbus, OH – A former high school teacher in Columbus has pleaded guilty to charges related to a months-long sexual relationship with a 15-year-old student. Jamelah Daboubi, previously employed at Horizon Science Academy, entered her plea last month in Franklin County Common Pleas Court, admitting to gross sexual imposition and unlawful sexual conduct with a minor.
The illicit relationship came to light when the student’s aunt, who held guardianship, discovered Daboubi and her nephew engaging in sexual contact inside the teacher’s vehicle. Court documents reveal the aunt approached the car and observed Daboubi “jump off of” the student’s lap.
The 10th-grade student later confirmed to police that he and Daboubi, 28, had been involved in a relationship that included kissing and touching. Court records detail interactions where Daboubi “grinded on him” and the student touched her breasts and buttocks over her clothing. Further investigation uncovered hundreds of phone calls and thousands of text messages exchanged between the two, often containing declarations of love.
In response to the allegations, Daboubi was promptly fired from her teaching position at Horizon Science Academy. She now faces a potential sentence of 18 months behind bars.
As part of her legal consequences, Daboubi will also be mandated to register as a sex offender. The court has additionally recommended five years of community control, ongoing counseling, the surrender of her teaching license, and performance of community service.
Horizon Science Academy issued a letter to families, confirming that “swift and appropriate” action was taken, which included placing Daboubi on administrative leave before her termination. The school’s statement clarified, “As of now, the individual is no longer employed at Horizon Science Academy,” and indicated that there was “no indication of any other concerns involving this individual and any other students, either on or off campus.”
