After more than two decades apart, Michele Hundley Smith, who vanished in 2001, was reunited with her daughter Amanda Hundley in a heartfelt moment outside a Rockingham County courtroom on Thursday.
Smith, now 63, appeared in court to address an outstanding DWI charge stemming from November 2001. Following her brief court appearance, she embraced Amanda tearfully – a poignant moment marking the end of a 24-year separation since Smith disappeared from her family.

Smith was located earlier this year in North Carolina after law enforcement received new information regarding her case. At the time of her disappearance, Smith was 38 years old. She left her Eden, North Carolina home on December 9, 2001, to go Christmas shopping at a K-Mart in Martinsville, Virginia, but never returned.
Her vehicle was never recovered, and her family reported her missing later that month. Despite extensive efforts involving multiple agencies and public appeals, her whereabouts remained unknown for 24 years.
Neighbors reported that Smith had been living quietly in a rural area near the South Carolina border for many years. In recent statements, she indicated a desire to repair her relationship with her daughter and the family she left behind.
Smith also appeared in court Thursday on the unresolved DWI charge issued just weeks before her disappearance. She was taken into custody in late February and posted bond shortly afterward. Her next court date is set for April 23.
