Colombian Security Forces Honored After Deadly Military Plane Crash

Bogotá, Colombia – A solemn ceremony took place Friday in Bogotá to honor the 69 members of Colombia’s security forces who lost their lives in a tragic military plane crash earlier this week. Photographs of the fallen were displayed before the altar of a church as survivors and families gathered to pay their respects.

Among those present were survivors of the crash, some confined to wheelchairs or bearing visible injuries, who joined in prayers for their comrades. The accident occurred Monday when a Colombian Aerospace Force C-130 Hercules aircraft crashed shortly after departing from Puerto Leguizamo, a town in the Amazon region. Of the 126 security personnel onboard, 57 survived the crash.

Gen. Hugo Alejandro López, commander of the Military Forces, expressed deep sorrow during the ceremony, stating, “When a soldier or police officer falls, a part of our military family is broken.” A priest read aloud the names of the deceased, honoring their sacrifice and dedication to the country.

Defense Minister Pedro Sánchez extended condolences to the grieving families, promising full institutional support. He reflected on the tragedy, saying, “For some, it was their final flight, one toward eternity. For others, those who survived, it was, in a way, a rebirth.”

Colombia has observed three days of national mourning following one of the most severe air disasters in recent memory. Investigations into the cause of the crash remain ongoing. Authorities have ruled out an attack by illegal armed groups and are currently examining factors including aircraft condition, runway status, and crew performance.

The tragedy has sparked renewed debate over the condition of Colombia’s military aircraft fleet. President Gustavo Petro, the country’s first left-wing leader, questioned how an aging aircraft-manufactured in 1983 and donated by the United States in 2020-was still in operational use. Petro has called for urgent modernization of the Hercules fleet, which provides tactical air transport capable of landing on rough, unpaved runways.

As Colombia mourns the loss of its security personnel, attention turns to ensuring such a tragedy does not happen again.
