Tiger Woods Faces DUI Charges Following Crash; Fans Show Support Amid Calls for Accountability

Tiger Woods has been charged with driving under the influence, property damage, and refusal to submit to a lawful test after a single-vehicle crash in Jupiter Island, Florida, on Friday. Authorities report that Woods was driving at a high rate of speed when his Land Rover clipped a vehicle towing a trailer, causing him to lose control and flip his SUV onto its side. Woods escaped the wreckage uninjured by climbing out through the passenger side.

Upon arrival, police noted signs of impairment. While a breathalyzer test ruled out alcohol use, Woods declined to provide a urine sample for drug testing. He was held at Martin County Jail for eight hours before being released on bail.

Despite the seriousness of the incident, Woods received a show of support from some fans at the Texas Children’s Houston Open on Saturday. Spectators were seen wearing “Free Tiger Woods” T-shirts featuring his mugshot, echoing a similar fan reaction earlier this year when Scottie Scheffler’s custody photo circulated following his arrest. (All charges against Scheffler were ultimately dropped.)

Woods, a 15-time major champion and influential PGA Tour figure as chairman of the Future Competition Committee, has not yet commented on the charges. The incident has sparked debate over the responsibility of high-profile athletes, with former PGA Tour pro and broadcaster Mark Lye urging the tour to take a firm stance. Speaking on FOX & Friends, Lye emphasized the need for accountability, noting Woods’ significant role within the tour and the potential damage to his legacy.

“Is this the legacy you want to leave? Because 25 years of great golf can be erased in a heartbeat,” Lye said. “We all feel bad for Tiger, but there’s got to be accountability, and it’s got to happen pretty soon.”

As the investigation continues, the golfing world watches closely to see how Woods and the PGA Tour will respond to the latest chapter in the sports icon’s troubled history with driving incidents.
