Anne Hathaway Opens Up About Choosing Harmony Over Stress in Life and Career
Anne Hathaway, 43, recently shared insights into her evolving approach to managing stress and finding balance amid a busy life. The acclaimed actress, currently leading the sequel to The Devil Wears Prada, revealed she made a conscious decision to avoid living as a “stressed person.”
“You can’t have a good time at a party if the hostess is stressed or she’s letting her stress show,” Hathaway told Harper’s Bazaar. She emphasized that she doesn’t want stress to affect those around her, including her children, friends, coworkers, or even strangers.
Hathaway explained that she has put significant effort into reframing how she processes the demands in her life, aiming to feel excitement rather than overwhelm. She described her career as having two distinct phases: an earlier period marked by an uncompromising focus on work, and a current chapter shaped by parenthood, sobriety, and greater presence.
“Before, there was this focus that was really uncompromising and uninterrupted,” she said. “And I just can’t tell you anymore what life is like without kids, but kids interrupt you all the time.”
Rather than striving for a perfect balance-which she and her friends find ultimately frustrating-Hathaway prefers to think in terms of “harmony.” “If the weight shifts in one direction, you then have to bounce it up on the other side, and we find that it winds us up as opposed to making us steady,” she explained. “We’re like, ‘We seek to harmonize our life.’”
Hathaway’s perspective echoes that of other notable parents in Hollywood. Reese Witherspoon has spoken about learning what’s truly worth stressing over after years of parenting, acknowledging that it’s okay not to be involved in every single activity. Similarly, Grey’s Anatomy star Camilla Luddington has found relief in letting go of the need to perfectly balance work and family every day, allowing herself to prioritize differently depending on the moment.
Together, these stars highlight a growing trend of redefining success and wellbeing-not by flawless balance, but through a more flexible, harmonious approach to life’s many demands.
