Howie Mandel Issues Apology to Kelly Ripa Following Awkward On-Air Moment
During a recent taping of Live with Kelly and Mark, comedian Howie Mandel found himself at the center of an unexpected on-air exchange with host Kelly Ripa that quickly gained attention online. The tension arose when Ripa and her husband and co-host, Mark Consuelos, complimented Mandel on how good he looks at age 70.
As Consuelos remarked, “You just celebrated 70 years. You’re 70 years old,” Ripa added that this “doesn’t make any sense” to her.
Mandel responded sharply, questioning the comment and then dismissing the compliment with, “I look great? That doesn’t mean anything to me!
No, no, no, no. I don’t like that, because that’s a caveat.”
Ripa tried to clarify, insisting, “We’re not saying you look great for 70. You look great,” but Mandel pushed back again, insisting that the qualifier was implied and unwelcome.
Despite the brief moment of friction, the rest of the interview proceeded without further incident.
On Sunday, Mandel addressed the incident in a heartfelt Instagram video, explaining that his remarks were intended as a joke but acknowledging how they may have come across. He expressed appreciation for Ripa’s longstanding support throughout his career and offered a sincere apology.
“I have been debating for 48 hours whether I should make this post or not… I don’t believe that somebody who’s a comedian needs to apologize for a joke, but this is for Kelly Ripa,” Mandel said. “When I go out there, I just try to be entertaining and funny, and sometimes things don’t land the way you mean them to.”
In a moment of reflection, Mandel admitted, “You’re right. You’re absolutely right.
And I’m sorry I didn’t see it that way. After a lot of thought and self-reflection, I do look great for my age!
I really do… I look fantastic, and I just have to embrace the fact that I look this good.”
Representatives for Ripa have not yet responded to requests for comment.
