New Immunotherapy Treatment Makes 26-Year-Old Cancer-Free After Stage 3 Diagnosis

A 26-year-old woman has been declared cancer-free after undergoing a promising new treatment for colorectal cancer.

Mrinali Dhembla shared her story on “Good Morning America,” revealing that she received the life-changing news in July 2025. Since then, she has been able to travel three times, marking a joyful return to normalcy.

Before her diagnosis, Dhembla endured persistent back pain and fatigue, symptoms she initially did not associate with cancer. Her diagnosis came as a shock-she was told she had Stage 3 rectal cancer that had spread to her spine.

“I just thought my life was going to end after months of aggravating back pain and fatigue,” Dhembla said. When her doctor confirmed the diagnosis, her first reaction was disbelief.

“I said, ‘That’s not possible. I’m just 26 years old,’” she recalled.

Colorectal cancer rates have been rising in younger adults. Research from the American Cancer Society notes an increase in rectal and colon cancer cases among people under 50 over the past few decades.

Genetic testing showed Dhembla’s cancer was linked to Lynch syndrome, a hereditary condition that disrupts the body’s ability to repair DNA errors. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention explains that individuals with Lynch syndrome face a higher risk of developing colorectal, uterine, and other cancers, often before age 50.

Dr. Nicholas Hornstein, one of Dhembla’s oncologists at Northwell Cancer Institute, highlighted the benefits of immunotherapy for patients with Lynch syndrome.

“Because they have so many mutations in their cancer cells, it allows their immune system to recognize them. They just need a little boost with immunotherapy to effectively fight the tumors,” he explained.

Dhembla was among the first to receive a new dual immunotherapy treatment, designed to “take the brakes off” her immune system, empowering it to attack cancer cells. Unlike traditional chemotherapy and radiation, this approach offered a less debilitating path to recovery. Remarkably, she even completed a 5K run during her treatment.

After just three infusions over four months, Dhembla was declared cancer-free and is now focused on future milestones, including planning her wedding.

She encourages others to be vigilant about their health: “I just wish I had seen a doctor when I was constantly sick every day. Listen to your body. If something feels off, please go to a doctor.”
