Eli Lilly’s Foundayo: The First GLP-1 Weight Loss Pill That Can Be Taken Anytime

In a significant development for weight management and type 2 diabetes treatment, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has approved Foundayo, a once-daily oral GLP-1 medication that does not require fasting before taking it. This approval marks a notable advancement compared to existing GLP-1 therapies, which typically involve weekly refrigerated injections or daily pills that must be taken on an empty stomach.

Foundayo, known generically as orforgipron, offers patients greater convenience by allowing them to take the medication at any time of day, fitting easily into their existing medication schedules without dietary timing restrictions. This flexibility could potentially expand the market to millions of patients seeking effective, manageable weight loss options.

A firsthand experience comes from Adam Salberg, a 59-year-old New Jersey resident who participated in an 18-month clinical trial assessing the drug’s safety and effectiveness. Salberg, who had struggled with weight management despite efforts through diet and exercise, found that Foundayo helped curb his appetite significantly. After about five days on the medication, he noticed he felt satisfied with smaller portions, a new experience after decades of eating habits.

The drug works by mimicking glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1), a natural hormone that regulates hunger. Foundayo’s effects include slower digestion and prolonged feelings of fullness, which contributed to Salberg’s weight loss of 25 pounds during the trial. He also adopted healthier lifestyle habits, including regular exercise and a Mediterranean-style diet, which supported his progress and helped maintain the weight loss after the trial ended.

Common side effects reported with GLP-1 medications include nausea, constipation, diarrhea, and vomiting, with varying incidence depending on dosage.

Now available on the market, Foundayo is priced between $25 per month with insurance coverage and $149 to $349 monthly for cash payments, depending on the dosage. Salberg plans to discuss resuming the medication with his doctor, hopeful about continuing his weight management journey with this new treatment option.
