Today Show Co-Host Willie Geist Marks 10 Years on Morning Program Amid Emotional Times
Willie Geist celebrated a significant milestone on Friday, April 10, marking a decade as a co-host on NBC’s Today show. The milestone comes during a challenging period for the program, as fellow co-anchor Savannah Guthrie recently returned to the air following a leave of absence prompted by the ongoing search for her missing mother, Nancy Guthrie.
Nancy, 84, disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1 and is believed to have been abducted. Her whereabouts remain unknown.
The Today team has shown support for Savannah and her family by wearing yellow ribbons in solidarity. Additionally, former co-host Hoda Kotb is scheduled to rejoin the show alongside Savannah starting April 13.
In a heartfelt interview with USA Today, Willie Geist shared the emotional toll the situation has taken. “To watch someone you love and someone you care about that much in such agony and suffering was very, very painful,” he said.
He described the helplessness he felt, emphasizing the team’s instinct to take action but having no way to change the circumstances. “All we could do was pray and pray and pray and send our love every single day,” Geist explained.
Reflecting on Savannah’s return to the anchor desk on Monday, April 6, Geist expressed admiration for her resilience. “To see her in that radiant yellow dress… it felt like a blessing that she was back, and to see her doing what she’s so good at,” he said. “Who knew, as we’re going through this, if she would be able to do that?”
Willie added, “But, of course, she could, because she’s Savannah, and she trusts her faith, and she’s so strong and smart and good at what she does. I think she, in some ways, needed to come home a little bit, too, and we were so happy to have her there.”
Geist, 50, has been a familiar face on Today since joining the team 10 years ago, working alongside co-hosts including Al Roker, Carson Daly, and Sheneille Jones. He also hosts Sunday Today with Willie Geist, a program that launched on April 17, 2016, combining hard news with entertainment interviews.
Savannah Guthrie joined the Today show two years prior to Willie’s arrival, and the two have since forged a strong working partnership, now tested by personal hardship. As the search for Nancy Guthrie continues, the Today family remains united in support of their colleague during this difficult time.
