Fans of the popular Netflix series Love on the Spectrum are mourning the breakup of one of the show’s most beloved couples. Abbey Romeo and David Isaacman, who met on the show and shared four and a half years together, have announced they are going their separate ways-though they remain on friendly terms.

In a joint statement shared with PEOPLE by their families, it was said, “Abbey and David spent four and a half years together and truly value the time they shared and each other.” The statement went on to explain, “At this point, they want different things and have decided to go their separate ways, but they remain friends wishing each other the best.”

Reports first surfaced in The U.S. Sun suggesting the split stemmed from disagreements about marriage timing.

A source revealed, “They couldn’t come to an agreement on when to get married. She was ready years ago, he still needed time.”

Abbey and David quickly became fan favorites after meeting during the first season of Love on the Spectrum in 2021. Their journey together was followed across all four seasons, beginning with their first date at San Diego Zoo Safari Park on July 12, 2021. Just last year, they celebrated their four-year anniversary by revisiting the zoo, with Abbey sharing a heartfelt Instagram clip of David giving her a gift.

Earlier this year, the couple seemed hopeful about their future. Abbey and her mother, Christine, discussed relationship expectations and marriage possibilities during a March episode of The Unplanned Podcast.

Christine encouraged Abbey by saying, “It doesn’t have to be in the traditional sense of what a neurotypical person would make it look like… You can still do what you do until you’re ready to move in together … so that they can make that commitment without having it upheave everything else.”

Meanwhile, Love on the Spectrum returned with its fourth season on Netflix on April 1, continuing to follow both returning favorites and new daters as they explore love and relationships. Co-creator Karina Holden reflected on the show’s impact, telling Tudum, “The show itself has actually become the template for people to then think, ‘That’s what love can look like in my life, and I can be like that character who doesn’t necessarily fit the typical stereotype.’” She added that the uniqueness of the individuals featured on the series has inspired viewers to confidently pursue their own versions of relationships, friendships, and love.
