Savannah Guthrie Absent from Today Show Amid Ongoing Search for Missing Mother

Savannah Guthrie was noticeably absent from the April 17 episode of the Today show, just days after returning to the broadcast following her mother’s disappearance. Her mother, Nancy Guthrie, 84, has been missing since January 31, when she was last seen at her Tucson, Arizona home. Authorities have since classified the case as a suspected kidnapping, but no suspects have been publicly identified as the investigation approaches its fourth month.

Savannah took a two-month leave after the distressing news and resumed her role on air earlier this month. However, her absence on Friday sparked speculation among viewers.

Some fans took to social media to question her whereabouts, noting that Savannah has been missing from the show on several Fridays. One viewer commented, “Seems Savannah Guthrie is taking every Friday off?

This should have been explicitly stated when she returned so people don’t keep speculating.” Others wondered if the absence was connected to new developments in her mother’s case.

Earlier in the week, viewers noticed Savannah stepping away abruptly during Wednesday’s broadcast. She had introduced an interview with Anne Hathaway, but after a commercial break, the segment was conducted by Hoda Kotb, who is currently filling in for Craig Melvin.

The show did not address the sudden change, leading to further online speculation. Savannah later returned to the broadcast that day.

Since her return, Savannah has been co-anchoring with Hoda Kotb, marking their first time sharing the desk since Hoda’s role change in January 2025. Hoda praised Savannah’s resilience, saying, “There’s nobody like her.”

Meanwhile, activity around Nancy Guthrie’s home in Tucson’s Catalina Foothills neighborhood has increased, with independent content creators and others visiting the area. This surge has prompted additional police patrols, including near the home of Savannah’s sister, Annie, and her husband.

Nancy was last seen around 9:45 p.m. on January 31 after being dropped off following a family dinner. When she failed to arrive at a friend’s home the next day as planned, she was reported missing.

Doorbell camera footage later surfaced showing a masked individual armed with a weapon on the morning of her disappearance. Despite this evidence, authorities have yet to release any suspect information or a clear motive.

In a show of support, Savannah’s family announced in late February a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s safe return. The search remains ongoing as the community and law enforcement continue to seek answers in this troubling case.
