ABC News Anchor David Muir Issues Warning as Thermos Recalls 8 Million Containers After Serious Injuries

David Muir, the anchor of ABC World News Tonight, delivered a sobering update Friday regarding a large-scale recall of Thermos containers linked to severe injuries. The recall affects approximately eight million Thermos products following reports that three individuals suffered permanent vision loss after being struck in the eye by a malfunctioning container lid.

During the May 1 broadcast, Muir informed viewers that the recall involves about 5.8 million Stainless King Food Jars and 2.3 million Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles. The announcement came alongside coverage of severe weather impacting the southern United States.

Muir explained the safety concern centers on the containers’ lids. When food or beverages remain inside for extended periods, pressure can build up, causing the stopper to eject forcefully upon opening.

This malfunction has led to 27 reported incidents of stoppers unexpectedly releasing, resulting in cuts and injuries. Most alarmingly, three cases have resulted in permanent eye injuries.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) issued the recall notice on April 30, specifying that the affected products include 16-ounce and 24-ounce Stainless King Food Jars manufactured before July 2023, as well as all 40-ounce Sportsman Food & Beverage Bottles regardless of production date.

Social media users quickly responded to the news, expressing shock and concern. Many thanked Muir for highlighting the recall and shared their intentions to dispose of their Thermos products as a precaution.

Consumers are urged to check their Thermos containers against the recall details and follow instructions from the CPSC to ensure their safety. This recall underscores the importance of vigilance when using everyday products and the potential risks posed by defective equipment.
