Man Sets Fire with Fireworks to Rob Walmart in Maryland

Additional Coverage:

Authorities in Cecil County, Maryland, are actively seeking a suspect involved in an arson and robbery at a Walmart store in Elkton. The Office of the State Fire Marshal issued an alert after responding to reports of a fire at the Walmart located at 1000 E. Pulaski Highway on the evening of April 29, around 7 p.m.

Investigators determined that the suspect deliberately ignited a fire on a boys’ clothing shelf using camp fuel and fireworks, likely as a distraction. During the ensuing evacuation of employees and customers, the individual forcibly accessed the jewelry counter, stealing a small amount of merchandise.

The fire caused approximately $5,000 in damage but was quickly extinguished by the Singerly Fire Company and neighboring departments. Although the store is equipped with fire sprinklers, they did not activate because the fire did not reach the necessary temperature threshold.

The suspect is described as a white male in his early 20s, wearing a Jefferson University Baseball shirt, a mask, and a Walmart-style vest. He fled the scene on a motorcycle without a license plate. Despite numerous tips suggesting a local baseball player, authorities have confirmed that this individual is not the suspect.

Walmart expressed gratitude for the prompt response by emergency services and confirmed their ongoing cooperation with law enforcement during the investigation.

Community reactions on social media reflected a mix of surprise and disbelief at the incident. Some commenters noted the disproportionate effort involved in the crime compared to the value of the stolen goods, while eyewitness accounts provided additional details about the suspect’s actions during the event.

This incident highlights ongoing concerns about retail theft, which have prompted some retailers to reconsider store security measures in recent months. Law enforcement continues to appeal for information from the public to assist in identifying and apprehending the individual responsible.
