OpenAI CEO Sam Altman Extends Unexpected Invitation to Elon Musk Amid Ongoing Legal Battle

In a surprising move following a week of courtroom clashes, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has extended an olive branch to his longtime rival and former cofounder Elon Musk. Altman announced plans for a small celebration on May 5 to mark the release of OpenAI’s latest AI model, GPT-5.5, and invited interested parties to RSVP through an online form. Notably, Altman mentioned that Musk “could come if he wants,” signaling a rare moment of cordiality amid their heated legal dispute.

The registration for the event quickly filled up, with Altman promising larger gatherings in the future. His invitation to Musk comes just days after U.S. District Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers cautioned both tech leaders to refrain from using social media to escalate tensions beyond the courtroom.

Altman and Musk’s rivalry dates back to 2018, when Musk departed OpenAI due to disagreements over the company’s strategic direction, particularly concerning safety and commercialization. Since then, Musk has been vocal in his criticism of OpenAI’s shift away from its original open-source nonprofit mission and has launched his own AI venture, xAI.

The dispute intensified in March 2024, when Musk filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, Altman, and other cofounders, alleging breaches of their initial agreement. The case moved into a highly publicized federal trial in Oakland in late April, featuring tense exchanges between Musk and OpenAI’s legal team.

Despite their ongoing feud and courtroom battles, Altman’s recent gesture underscores a hope for reconciliation. “The world needs more love,” he remarked on social media, hinting at the possibility of healing old wounds in the rapidly evolving field of artificial intelligence.
