California Drivers Face Soaring Gas Prices, With Mono County Leading the Nation
Gasoline prices in California have surged to unprecedented levels, placing the state-and particularly Mono County-at the top of the nation’s fuel cost charts. Located just west of Yosemite National Park, Mono County is now among the most expensive places in the U.S. to fill up, with average prices approaching $7 per gallon, according to recent data from AAA.
Statewide, the average price for regular gasoline hovers around $6.11 per gallon, significantly higher than the national average of $4.46. Other major California urban centers also report steep prices: San Francisco averages about $6.30, while San Diego and the Los Angeles-Long Beach area both see prices near $6.10 per gallon. Hawaii follows California with the country’s second-highest prices, averaging $5.64 per gallon.
The costlier grades of fuel reflect similar trends in the state, with mid-grade gasoline averaging $6.33, premium at $6.53, and diesel reaching $7.50 per gallon.
Several factors contribute to these record-high prices. California imposes a steep 71-cent-per-gallon tax on gasoline.
Additionally, the closure of two local refineries last year has increased reliance on imported fuel supplies, putting upward pressure on costs. Environmental regulations also play a role: California’s strict fuel standards prioritize ethanol over methanol as an oxygenate to reduce emissions, but this approach makes refining more expensive.
Compounding these domestic factors is international turmoil affecting global oil markets. The ongoing conflict in Iran and the associated closure of the Strait of Hormuz-a crucial shipping lane for Persian Gulf oil exports-have exacerbated price pressures worldwide, including in California.
In response to regional tensions, the U.S. Navy has updated its rules of engagement, authorizing strikes against immediate threats to ships passing through the Strait of Hormuz.
The administration has launched “Project Freedom,” aimed at securing safe passage for commercial vessels trapped in the strait, which President Trump has described as a humanitarian effort. However, Iranian officials have warned that any American interference will be met with retaliation, raising concerns about further escalation.
As global geopolitical uncertainties persist, California consumers continue to grapple with some of the highest gas prices in the nation, underscoring the complex interplay between local policies and international events shaping energy costs.
