A peaceful soccer game outside Southwest Elementary School in Grand Rapids, Michigan, turned tragic Tuesday evening when gunfire erupted, leaving a 15-year-old boy and a mother of seven dead. Authorities say 18-year-old Rafael Martinez-Lopez faces multiple murder and weapons charges in connection with the fatal shooting.
The incident occurred around 6:30 p.m. as children played soccer. Police report that Martinez-Lopez approached the group and asked to join the game, but was refused-either he or his younger brother.
This rejection sparked a confrontation that escalated rapidly, culminating in gunfire. Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin, 15, was struck and later died, while Savanah Rubio, 38, who attempted to shield the children from the violence, was also fatally wounded.
According to police, Martinez-Lopez tried to shoot another child, but the gun failed to fire. The shooting prompted the closure of two nearby schools as the community grappled with the shock of such senseless violence during what should have been a safe, innocent evening.
Martinez-Lopez appeared in court on Friday, where a judge ordered him held without bond. Grand Rapids police have charged him with two counts of open murder, several felony firearms offenses, and other weapons charges. Interim Police Chief Joe Trigg expressed deep sorrow, calling the shooting “an act of senseless violence” and commending officers for their swift response that prevented further harm.
Rubio’s family remembers her as a devoted mother and protector. Family friend Alana Crooks shared, “She guarded Jeremiah in her last moment.
She played her role exactly as she was supposed to as a mother and a guardian.” Rubio leaves behind her husband and seven children, ages 3 to 17.
Those who knew her recall her generosity and warmth, describing her as someone who would “literally give you the shirt off her back.”
Similarly, the family of Jeremiah Cuevas-Griffin mourns a bright young life cut short. His mother, Mildred Griffin, spoke of her son’s recent commitment to church and youth activities, saying, “Somebody stole from me, and that’s something I can’t get back.”
In the wake of this tragedy, two separate GoFundMe campaigns have been established to support the families of Rubio and Cuevas-Griffin. These efforts have already raised significant funds, reflecting the community’s outpouring of sympathy and support.
As the city of Grand Rapids mourns, many express heartbreak not only for the lives lost but also for the young man accused of causing such devastation. “I felt like three people died that night,” Crooks reflected, “because I believe that that young man threw his life away by taking two lives.”
