A University of Georgia student tragically lost his life after jumping from a cliff into Lake Martin in Alabama during a graduation celebration with friends. Jayden Barreto, 24, disappeared underwater after leaping from Chimney Rock, located about 40 miles from Montgomery, on Wednesday.

Elmore County Sheriff Bill Franklin confirmed the incident, stating, “Jayden jumped off the rock, and witnesses told us he never came back.” Jayden, who hailed from Columbus, Georgia, was celebrating his recent graduation at this popular spot known for thrilling jumps, often touted as a must-do for adrenaline seekers.

Emergency responders arrived promptly after reports of a missing swimmer. Specialized dive teams conducted an extensive search for several hours before recovering Jayden’s body at approximately 9:45 p.m. Divers located him on an underwater ledge about 50 feet below the surface, while the lake’s depth extends at least 70 feet beyond that point.

Montgomery Fire Rescue deployed six divers who faced challenging conditions throughout the search effort. The department highlighted the collaboration between various agencies, including the Elmore County Sheriff’s Office, Delta Division Dive Team, ALEA, and local emergency management agencies, praising their teamwork and professionalism.

Sheriff Franklin explained the dangers of the jump from Chimney Rock, describing it as “like hitting a sheet of glass from 60 feet up,” with the outcome heavily dependent on how the jumper enters the water. While the investigation continues, authorities have found no indication of anything other than a tragic accident resulting in drowning.

Jayden’s body was transferred to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences to determine the official cause of death. The University of Georgia confirmed that he graduated in 2025 with degrees in management information systems and psychology.

Tributes poured in from friends and classmates, who remembered Jayden as a kind and well-liked individual. One friend wrote, “Jayden was a pure light in this world.

He was truly loved by everyone and will be missed.” Another expressed condolences, saying, “My prayers and condolences go out to the Barreto family.

My heart is heavy: Jayden was a great person, classmate, and friend.” A third friend added, “Jayden was an immediate friend, and my experience at college was made all the better because of knowing him.”

The community mourns the loss of a promising young man whose life was cut short during what was meant to be a joyful celebration.
