Retired FBI Agent Questions DNA Evidence in Nancy Guthrie Disappearance

Additional Coverage:

Nancy Guthrie, mother of Today show anchor Savannah Guthrie, has been missing for more than 100 days. The 84-year-old disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona home on February 1, under circumstances that suggest a violent altercation took place.

Authorities discovered signs of a struggle at the residence, including an open door and blood near the entrance. Despite ongoing investigation efforts, no suspects have been publicly identified, and Nancy’s whereabouts remain unknown.

Retired FBI agent Steven Moore has publicly criticized the Pima County Sheriff’s Department, led by Sheriff Chris Nanos, for their handling of the crime scene. In an interview with NewsNation correspondent Brian Entin, Moore questioned the thoroughness of the investigation, particularly regarding forensic evidence. He expressed skepticism about the claim that only a single hair strand was found, stating that “if they found one hair, there are probably 10 more” that should be uncovered by trained crime scene experts.

Moore emphasized that critical evidence in cases like this often goes unnoticed without meticulous examination, noting that forensic investigators are skilled at detecting fingerprints, skin cells, fibers, and other trace materials invisible to the naked eye. Based on his experience, he believes more evidence likely exists and could be key to solving the case.

Sheriff Nanos recently told the media that the investigation is “getting closer” to a resolution, though the department has not released details on any potential suspects. The sheriff has faced public criticism over the case’s progress and the management of the investigation.

Early in the search, security footage showed a masked individual near Nancy’s front door, wearing a gun holster and appearing to tamper with the doorbell camera. Nancy herself was not captured on video. DNA recovered from the scene did not match any profiles in the FBI’s CODIS database, but authorities are pursuing genetic genealogy testing to help identify possible leads.

The Guthrie family has issued a $1 million reward for information leading to Nancy’s safe return. The community and investigators alike continue to hope for answers in this troubling disappearance.
