Colorado K9, handler selected to provide security at Super Bowl

DENVER (KDVR) — An officer and a K-9 with the Colorado Springs Police Department were selected to help provide security at this year’s Super Bowl in Las Vegas.

K-9 Donut and her handler, Officer Rodney Biechler, normally work in CSPD’s Airport Unit to keep travelers safe. But in a couple of weeks, they will be working with teams from all over the country to keep people safe at the Super Bowl.

Donut is a 6-year-old German Shorthaired Pointer who has served with CSPD for about a year now. She has expertise in detecting explosives and even has experience in protecting fans, athletes and workers in the Super Bowl.

Donut and Biechler traveled to Arizona last year to assist with the game, and they were selected to come back for the game at Allegiant Stadium on Feb. 11.

The stadium can fit some 65,000 people and Forbes expects Las Vegas to be flooded with nearly half a million people amid the excitement of the Super Bowl weekend, so Biechler and Donut will be plenty busy.
